Tankless Hot Water Heaters: Gas vs. Electric

July 11th, 2011

As a homeowner you probably have a large hot water heater somewhere in your house. These tall, large tanks are full of hot water and stand the risk of causing a lot of damage if it rusts out and lets the water escape the tank. Generally the standard hot water heater only lasts 10 years. Due to this, more and more people are weighing the benefits of going tankless. Tankless hot water heaters are also known as On-Demand Water Heaters.

When you consider the merits of tankless the question is why isn’t everyone switching over and replacing their standard tank option for tankless? Price is one good reason. They cost more. But there is another consideration to account for: will it be gas or electric.

The return on investment for gas is better than electric. Here’s why….
Gas tankless hot water heaters have more BTUs which keep up better and has a stronger flow rate for recovery. Also, electric costs a little more to operate because you need a dedicated minimum 100 AMP service. So as a homeowner, you will put out more upfront money with an electric tankless hot water heater than with gas.

Nevertheless, Tankless is still a great option. Don’t forget these units, gas or electric, last 2 times longer than the tank hot water heat so you will only be paying for 1 tankless hot water heater in a 20 year period versus 2 tank hot water heaters in the same time frame.
And there’s the feel good factor of the Go Green effort. Saving our landfills from these metal monsters is an intrinsic benefit that doesn’t calculate into the real dollars and cents of going tankless.

If you need a new hot water heater or have an older model that you know is soon to give out and want to learn more about the options, I encourage you to call, email or stop in at one of our 3 convenient locations. We are more than happy to identify what you need and give you some choice.
